For more than a decade, photojournalist Elizabeth Lloyd has been traveling the United States documenting an often unseen sector of homelessness- those living day-to-day at rundown roadside motels. Her images speak of a lifestyle largely unrecognized in this country. The subjects’ stories are all different but their situations are the same- up against a shortage of low-income housing, these struggling men and women (and their children) have no where else to turn. For them, daily-rate rooms at forgotten motels are the only thing keeping them off the streets.
Today we feature a few images from Elizabeth’s ongoing project entitled “The Hidden Homeless.” She shares more images and the stories behind each person she photographs on her blog.
While she spends much of the year traveling between New York and Mexico as a destination wedding photographer, she pours just as much energy into documentary and other projects. Elizabeth’s ability to tell stories on both ends of the spectrum is a stirring reminder of what a truly powerful tool the camera is.
We’re honored to have Elizabeth shooting as our guest photographer on Instagram this month. Follow @thedefineschool to see Elizabeth’s interpretation of this month’s theme: NOISE.
